Former President Rodrigo Duterte, now 80 and detained in The Hague pending a drug war trial, made one thing clear: He does want not die abroad. The former president told his daughter Vice President Sara Duterte about his wish to return to the Philippines where he wants to spend his final days. The vice president revealed her phone conversation with her dad during a media interview outside the ICC facility on Friday, April 4. She was only there to drop off a legal document when the call came through. The father-daughter chat lasted for almost half an hour, which the veep claimed was the longest phone she ever hand with her dad. Sabi niya, ‘I am an old man, I can die anytime but I want to die in my country,'” the Vice President shared. She reassured her father that his lawyers are working hard on his case. Duterte’s legal team led by Atty. Nicholas Kaufman has already been formed to defend him at the ICC. “And I told him that we understand that you want it now and it is urgent. And he said yes. And I said, I told him that the lawyers are working everyday on your case and there is a lawyer everyday visiting you, explaining what they are doing,” Vice President Sara said. According to the country’s veep, her father also stood firm on his past actions. “Sinabi din niya na lahat ng ginawa —‘Everything that I did was for my country. Whether that statement is acceptable or not, but that is my statement. Everything I did, I did for my country,'” she said. Duterte, arrested by Philippine authorities on March 11 and flown to the Netherlands, faces charges of murder as a crime against humanity before the international tribunal. He previously declared he would take full responsibility for the drug war, promising to protect government forces doing their job. He also defended his anti-drug crackdown to ensure peace and order and protect families from the drug trade.
