(AFP) MANILA, Philippines — The Dutertes are neither soliciting nor accepting donations to support their trip to The Hague, Netherlands, to be with former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained there. Vice President Sara Duterte, in an ambush interview, said that her brother, Davao City 1st District Rep. Paolo Duterte will soon arrive in The Hague so that there will be a family member available to visit the former president in his detention facility at the International Criminal Court (ICC). And hindi pa namin ma-confirm ang pagdating ni Mayor Sebastian Duterte, pero supposedly dapat siya yung susunod, pag-alis ni Congressman Pulong Duterte, dapat nandito na siya sa The Hague,” the vice president told reporters last Friday. (So when Honeylet [Avanceña] leaves — before she departs, Congressman Pulong Duterte will arrive. And we still can’t confirm the arrival of Mayor Sebastian Duterte, but supposedly, he’s the next one to come. After Congressman Pulong Duterte leaves, he’s expected to already be here in The Hague.) She was then asked who funded their family members’ trips to The Hague. “So, ang arrangement namin ay KKB o kanyang-kanyang bayad. Hindi namin napapag-usapan. Hindi rin kami naghihingian ng pera. Napag-usapan namin na hindi tumanggap ng donasyon at hindi humingi ng tulong,” Vice President Duterte said. (So our arrangement is KKB — each one pays their own way. We don’t talk about money, and we don’t ask each other for it. We also agreed not to accept donations or ask for help.) “So kung kailangan man na mag-dispose ng mga kagamitan para masuportahan yung mga pangangailangan sa pera, ay iyon ang gagawin namin. Because kung napapansin niyo, yan yun natutunan namin sa tatay namin. At yan din yung natutunan namin sa tatay namin. At yan din yung discussion namin kanina na huwag humihingi ng tulong,” she also said. (So if it becomes necessary to sell some of our belongings to cover financial needs, then that’s what we’ll do. Because if you’ve noticed, that’s something we learned from our father. And that was also part of our discussion earlier — not to ask for help.) In the same interview, Duterte said she is looking forward to returning to the Philippines, as her father’s core defense team has already been formed. “Everything is organized with the lawyers. And there is already a system for the family with regard to the visiting here in the detention unit,” she said. “Yes, yes. I’m excited to go home. I’ll just book the travel arrangements to go home,” she added, not disclosing the exact date of her return to Manila. The former president was arrested in Manila on March 11. He was flown the same day to The Hague, Netherlands to face trial before the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity allegedly committed during his administration’s drug war. His administration’s drug war claimed at least 6,000 lives, according to official government data. However, human rights watchdogs estimated the death toll from the drug war to be between 12,000 and 30,000 from 2016 to 2019.
